Lawsy: The teenage rap crooner's 'Lawsy Pick Up' is officially streaming everywhere (Exclusive)
The moment I heard his ‘Giddy Up’ anthem, I knew Lawsy was on a serious grind in his own lane. So it’s only right to geek out over his newly released Lawsy Pick Up studio album release by chopping it up with the hip-hop crooner about his North Carolina roots, gearing up for the project’s massive drop and his co-signs continuing to stack up.
We’ve heard the ‘Lawsy Pick Up’ tag, when did you realize you had to go with that tag for your album title?
Lawsy: I just had to. That tag is iconic. I’ve had that shit for a minute, since I was like, 12. So that shit’s been in every song. Like, for three years.
With the glow up and the popularity - can you embrace the fun aspect of social media anymore or does it feel like social media is just part of the marketing package you have to be a part of?
Lawsy: Sometimes it can feel like that but other times it’s fun. I’ll just post funny shit and people laugh at it and stuff like that. That’s fun. But then, there’s other times where it’s like, ‘Damn, I just have to get this video up and it feels more like a job.’ Obviously, it’s like 50-50. A lot of the times it’s also fun.
Is there a platform you’re obsessed with? Of course there’s TikTok, of course IG Stories, Snapchat is still in existence - just for posting random stuff?
Lawsy: I be on my spam account on Instagram. I just be going live on there. That’s where I post my personal shit.
You have a lot of people messing with you now. You have DeJ Loaf following you, Sally Sossa, Cole Bennett. Do you even geek out anymore or do you feel like you’re glowing up and it’s as expected?
Lawsy: I definitely still do. I’ve got some crazy follow backs. Like with Cole Bennet, I’ve watched all of his music videos when he first started making shit with Lil Skies. A long time ago. It was crazy when he followed me because it’s like, ‘I’m really doing this shit.’ I just think of myself three years ago, like what I would think. I pull myself back. It’s definitely wild.
What was your take of his ‘100’ video with Baby Iron?
Lawsy: That shit was hard as fuck. I saw hella clips from there on TikTok and I went to go watch it. That shit was fire.
How much thought and process goes into the actual visual element of your own music videos? I can tell that you churn out fire, dope stuff and there’s a solid cinematic feel too.. It seems like there’s a whole behind the scenes team that helps get those videos going.
Lawsy: There definitely is. The videos are always really fun to shoot. It always has a nice plot line that goes with the lyrics. There’s definitely a lot put behind the music videos.
