Love the energy level of what Cory Gunz brings to the table? How about seeing him pulling through to Marcy Projects to salute the legendary JAY-Z ‘22 Two’s’ with his own ‘99 9’s’ music video? My goodness.
Pure genius and signature Cory, of course. Completely tap in.
Multi-platinum-selling recording artist Cory Gunz takes it back to where JAY-Z’s story began in the official music video for “99 9’s,” filmed outside Brooklyn’s Marcy Projects. Pulling up in a yellow Lamborghini against the backdrop of the housing complex where JAY-Z grew up, Cory pays homage to the rap legend’s 1996 classic “22 Two’s.” The video also features an appearance from Memphis Bleek, adding another connection to JAY-Z’s early career. Produced by Ski Beatz, the same producer behind JAY-Z’s original “22 Two’s” from his debut album, Reasonable Doubt, “99 9’s” revisits the record nearly three decades later. Cory builds on the original concept with intricate rhyme schemes, double entendres and layered wordplay, putting his own stamp on a song closely tied to New York hip-hop history. With the yellow Lamborghini parked outside Marcy Projects and Memphis Bleek appearing in the visual, the video brings together recognizable elements of JAY-Z’s legacy while keeping Cory’s lyricism at the forefront.
The video arrives following the October 2 release of Cory’s latest project, 96 Era, inspired by the sound and lyricism of 1990s hip-hop. In addition to “99 9’s,” the project features “Living Proof” with OT The Real and “Kat & Brunson”featuring NBA legend Shaquille O’Neal. The latter was released in June in support of the New York Knicks’ championship run. The project also includes Cory’s “WYFL Freestyle” as a bonus track, which has surpassed five million views and earned placements on Apple Music playlists including New in Hip-Hop, Viral Hip-Hop, BARS and The New New York.
The project follows a series of releases from the Bronx native, including “New York New York,” produced by Grammy Award-winning producer Nottz, “Bag” featuring Grafh and “Kat & Brunson” featuring Shaquille O’Neal. His previous releases include “Whispering” featuring Styles P and Whispers, “For Da Crew” featuring Sheek Louch, “Fish Fry”featuring NEMS and Whispers, “Nay Say,” “3 Staxx,” “Redrum (Freestyle Militia Mix),” “Die Slowly” featuring Chris Rivers and “Anxiety (Freestyle).”
Cory will also take the stage at New York City’s SOB’s on Tuesday, October 27, for a live performance hosted by HOT 97’s DJ Spazo. The show will feature additional performances from Vado, Kyah Baby and more, with doors opening at 6 p.m.
Best known for his appearance alongside Lil Wayne on the multi-platinum hit “6 Foot 7 Foot,” Cory Gunz reunited with Wayne onstage at Madison Square Garden last summer. The Bronx native continues to build on his Young Money legacy while establishing his own catalog of releases.
